An easy international beach drive from Phoenix
Puerto Peñasco—better known to many Arizona travelers as Rocky Point—is roughly 213 road miles from Phoenix. Pure driving time can be under four hours, but allow more time for fuel, food, immigration, traffic, construction and the international border.
Sonora is currently listed at Level 3: Reconsider Travel. Current guidance permits U.S. government employees to travel between Lukeville–Sonoyta and Puerto Peñasco only on Federal Highway 8 and strongly advises U.S. citizens to follow the same restrictions.

The best route from Phoenix to Rocky Point
From the Phoenix metro area, travel west on I-10 and connect with Arizona State Route 85 south. SR 85 leads through Gila Bend, Ajo and Why, then through Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument to the Lukeville Port of Entry.
After entering Mexico at Sonoyta, stay on the signed route to Federal Highway 8 toward Puerto Peñasco. This is the direct corridor identified in current U.S. State Department guidance. Do not let a navigation app send you onto an unfamiliar alternate route.
Important 2026 SR-85 construction update
The Arizona Department of Transportation began a pavement rehabilitation project on SR 85 in June 2026 in the Ajo-area corridor between Elota Avenue and milepost 60.
Work is expected to continue into early 2027. Typical construction hours are approximately 6:00 a.m.–8:00 p.m. Monday through Friday, with flagging, rolling restrictions, single-lane traffic and a temporary 25 mph work-zone speed limit. Check current ADOT conditions and build extra time into border day.
Mexico Highway 8 improvements in 2026
In June 2026, Sonora announced approximately 1.8 billion pesos for modernization of the Sonoyta–Puerto Peñasco highway corridor as part of the state highway program.
Work locations can change. Watch for posted zones, obey road crews and remain on Federal Highway 8.
Best stops before the border
Gila Bend is a logical early break. Ajo is the best major stop before the border for fuel, groceries, food and restrooms. Why is the final small community before the Organ Pipe corridor, and fuel is available there.
Fuel is also available in Lukeville, but services are limited. Enter Mexico with a full tank rather than depending on an immediate fuel stop.

Lukeville border hours in 2026
U.S. Customs and Border Protection currently lists the Lukeville passenger crossing as open from 6:00 a.m. until 8:00 p.m. Hours can change, so verify them on the day you travel.
Do not plan a 7:55 p.m. arrival. Construction, traffic, inspections or a vehicle problem could leave you on the wrong side overnight. Check again before the return drive, especially on Sundays and holiday weekends.
Passports and entry documents
Every traveler should carry valid original documents. U.S. citizens crossing by land should be prepared to present a passport book or passport card; a passport card is not valid for international air travel. Children also need appropriate travel documents.
For maximum flexibility, carry a passport book. Do not rely on a driver's license alone.
Do you need an FMM for Rocky Point?
Treat immigration requirements separately from vehicle-permit rules. Puerto Peñasco is beyond the immediate border area, so visitors should plan to complete Mexico's required immigration entry process.
The Mexican Consulate in Phoenix currently instructs travelers entering by land to obtain the FMM at the point of entry rather than depending on an online-only process. Requirements can vary by citizenship, stay and purpose; verify shortly before departure.
Mexican auto insurance is required
U.S. automobile insurance alone is not sufficient for driving in Mexico. Purchase a Mexican policy effective before crossing and carry printed and digital proof.

Vehicle permits and the Sonora Free Zone

Different rules can apply beyond the exempt area or when carrying motorcycles, ATVs, personal watercraft or certain small boats. Verify recreational-equipment rules with Mexican customs before departure.
Driving through Sonoyta and on Highway 8
Slow down after crossing, follow posted limits and stay on the signed Puerto Peñasco / Highway 8 route. Watch carefully for intersections, pedestrians and changing speeds.
Continue on Federal Highway 8 through the open Sonoran Desert. Plan the Mexico portion in daylight, remain alert and avoid unnecessary stops or unfamiliar shortcuts.
Cell service, offline maps and emergencies
Service can be inconsistent on the desert route. Download the route, save your lodging address and insurer number, and carry a charging cable or power bank.
