Prepare for a remote desert environment.
The reserve is not an ordinary roadside attraction. Access, routes, hours, fees, and vehicle requirements can change with staffing and conditions.
Why El Pinacate matters
El Pinacate and Gran Desierto de Altar is a UNESCO World Heritage landscape of volcanic craters, lava fields, desert habitat, and enormous dune systems.
Read the UNESCO overview ↗Schuk Toak Visitor Center and Museum
Located along Federal Highway 8 between Puerto Peñasco and Sonoyta, Schuk Toak introduces the reserve’s geology, wildlife, culture, and conservation. Current public listings show limited weekly operating days, so confirm before driving.
- Call ahead for current opening days and admission.
- Do not assume the museum or scenic routes are open.
Crater and scenic routes
Reserve routes may include rough, remote roads with washboard, rocks, soft sand, and limited services. Ask staff which routes are open and suitable for your vehicle.

Carry more water than you expect to need, fill your fuel tank, protect yourself from the sun, download maps, and tell someone your route. Avoid remote travel in extreme heat.
Protect the landscape
Remain on authorized roads and trails. Do not climb closed areas, collect rocks or plants, disturb wildlife, create new tracks, or enter sensitive dunes.
Guided dune experience
CEDO offers a separate nature-focused experience in the Gran Desierto de Altar dunes, subject to group minimums, conditions, and seasonal closures.

Cooler months are generally more comfortable. Summer temperatures can become dangerous quickly, and seasonal weather may affect roads or access.
Plan ahead
Confirm current opening hours, road conditions, fees, and permitted routes directly with reserve staff. Do not rely on old blog posts or map listings for same-day access.
